About Merridale
Rooted in Family
I’m Janet Docherty, and this farm has been my pride and joy for over three decades. What began as a run-down cidery has grown into a place where families and friends gather to enjoy good food, award-winning ciders and spirits, and the beauty of the Cowichan Valley. Each product we make carries a story of adventure, a touch of rebellion, and a sprinkle of island charm. My son Jason, who grew up here, is now our General Manager, and together with our amazing team, we’re proud to carry on Merridale’s legacy with heart, community, and care for the land.

How It All Began
Over thirty years ago, while visiting my tequila-making Mexican familia in Manzanillo, my founding partner and I started dreaming about a new adventure. That dream led us to a slightly run-down cidery in Cobble Hill. “How hard could it be?” we thought. Spoiler alert: pretty challenging! Our backgrounds were in law, finance, and real estate, not cider making, so the learning curve was steep. But in 1999, we took the reins, and that’s when Merridale’s lifelong adventure truly began. What started as a humble cidery has grown into a farm, distillery, farmhouse store, and eatery, a destination we’re proud to share.
Supporting Our Community & Canines
Merridale has always believed in giving back to the community that supports us. We’re proud to partner with the BC SPCA Cowichan & District Community Animal Centre, supporting their work through fundraising, special events and initiatives here at the farm.
Our annual Harvest for Hounds brings together two things we love: harvest season and four-legged visitors, while helping animals in our community.

Growing Merridale
More than 30 years later, Merridale is still growing, changing and finding new ways to bring people together. What started with an orchard and a love of cider has grown into the farm you see today, but we’ve never stopped asking what comes next.
Curious about Merridale? From our cider and spirits to visiting the farm, the orchard and everything in between, we’ve answered some of the questions we hear most often.
