Making a Difference, One Paw at a Time | Jan’s Blog

I know it’s early to start thinking about Christmas, but it’s never too early to start thinking about what you can do to make a difference. In a world that sometimes feels a little upside down, it’s easy to believe that one person can’t change much. But I don’t believe that. I truly believe that every one of us can– one small, thoughtful act at a time. We can open our hearts, find a way to ease someone’s burden, or brighten a day. That’s how change begins.

If you read my blog from September, you might remember that I wrote about the charities I chose to support this year and my belief that together, we can make a difference. In October, we turned our focus to the BC and Alberta Guide Dogs. What a remarkable organization– did you know they not only train guide dogs for people with vision challenges, but also for those living with PTSD and autism? Honestly, it fills my heart to think about all the incredible ways dogs help us. They’re pure love wrapped in fur. When I’m having an off day, my first instinct is to find a dog to hug– it’s the best kind of therapy.

So, in October, we launched Harvest for Hounds. We invited our talented friend and photographer Danielle (check out her beautiful work!) to Merridale, where she captured portraits of all the wonderful pups you brought to the farm. The money you spent on those photos went directly to the charity. To make the day even more special, our local community contributed to raffle baskets, and between that, the cider and Rhumbs flowing, and the generosity of everyone who joined us, we raised $2,200 over two days. Will that train a dog? Not quite. But it’s a start – and starting matters. Every ripple begins with a single drop.

Now, as we turn our eyes toward Christmas, my heart is full again. It’s always a magical time at the farm–the lights, the laughter, the sense of togetherness– but this year, we’re also using it as another chance to give back. This December, our focus will be on the Raincoast Foundation and their work protecting wolves here on the island.

You might notice a theme here– yes, I really do love dogs (and their wild cousins). Over the years, my own dogs– mostly huskies and malamutes– have been close in spirit to the wolves. They’re beautiful, intelligent, soulful creatures who deserve our respect and protection. Raincoast’s science-backed work ensures that wildlife like them can thrive in the ecosystems they belong to.

When you come to Merridale this December for your photos with Santa, you’ll once again be helping make a difference. Danielle will be back for three festive days, capturing those special moments, and every dollar from ticket sales will go directly to the Raincoast Foundation. We’ll also be looking for other ways to support their work throughout the season– so stay tuned.

Christmas doesn’t have to be just about material things. It can be about connection, compassion, and care for each other, for our community, and for the animals who share this beautiful island with us. And that’s the reason I am starting Christmas early and sending you this email. Jot it down in your calendar.
