Why Simple Outings Are Becoming More Valuable | Jan’s Blog

Why simple outings are becoming more valuable I didn’t realize how important simple outings were, or how much I had trained my brain to live off the dopamine of being constantly busy. I began to understand this when I gave myself an intentional block of time to unplug. A whole week! No phone, no work, no news, no connection to the outside world. It wasn’t easy, stepping away felt unfamiliar. Actually, it felt extremely uncomfortable, but the quiet reflection that came from that time helped me understand the grounding power of slowing down and embracing simple, meaningful tasks.

The benefits have been gentle but profound. My mind has slowed; I rest more easily at night and stepping outside-even for a few minutes-has become essential. I notice more, breathe differently, and find a calm clarity that’s easy to forget in the rush of everyday life. I’ve brought that same intention to Merridale. April here has its own rhythm: the orchards begin to soften with blossom, ferns and wildflowers appear along the orchard walk, and the air carries the steady chorus of birds in the trees. If you linger into the evening, that chorus gives way to the gentle symphony of frogs rising with dusk. The farm isn’t busy yet, and the days invite you to slow your pace, notice the details, and simply be present as spring unfolds in its own quiet way.

You can experience this too at Merridale. Take a self-guided orchard walk-it’s free and a simple way to reconnect and breathe. If you haven’t done it before, you’ll find it both enchanting and educational. Or book one of our new picnic lunches for 2 to 4 people-spread a blanket by the pond, bring a book or a deck of cards, and let the orchard and valley set your pace. Turn your phone off, and you’ll be amazed at what you can see and hear.

April is the perfect month to enjoy these moments. I invite you to wander down the path to our door – just the walk in is enough to slow you down. Whatever you choose to do, whether eating, tasting, touring, walking, picnicking, or simply sitting in the orchard, I promise you’ll leave feeling refreshed and renewed.

Beautiful message Janet, the return of the morning birds is a delight to our ears as we awaken and the sound of the frogs at bedtime add comfort ❤️
